A Class I hospital and the end-of-line referral centre for Hải Phòng itself, which means serious cases do not have to be moved to another province. It has two campuses; the second, in An Đồng, concentrates on oncology and intensive care. The city's 115 ambulance service brings patients here. For anything serious, call 115 and come here.

The public facility on the island. The UK government list records English here as limited. This is where initial treatment happens if you are on the island, but it is not an end-of-line hospital — a serious case still means getting to the mainland.

The island is about 50 km from Hải Phòng with daily ferries. We could find no source stating whether ferries run at night, and no source at all on helicopter or boat medical evacuation from the island — so we are not going to claim anything about it. If you are travelling with someone who has a chronic condition, or with small children, ask your accommodation and your insurer directly about getting to the mainland outside ferry hours, on the day you check in.

A map trap on Cát Bà

There is a place on the island called Hospital Cave. It is a wartime HISTORIC SITE and now a tourist attraction — not a working medical facility. It shows up on maps looking like a hospital, and it is very easy to tap in a hurry.

Emergencies and major trauma

Call 115 and go to Việt Tiệp Friendship Hospital. The advantage of Hải Phòng is that the end-of-line hospital is in the city itself — you are not weighing up a trip to Hà Nội for an emergency.

Oncology and intensive care

Việt Tiệp's second campus in An Đồng concentrates on these two areas. Worth knowing so that if you are sent to "campus 2", you understand it is not a different hospital.

Malaria: the CDC names Hải Phòng as having none

This is one of the few cases where an official source is explicit by name: the US CDC's malaria country table lists Hải Phòng among the cities with no malaria risk. You do not need malaria prophylaxis to come to Hải Phòng. Dengue is still a matter of mosquito prevention, as everywhere in Vietnam.
