The honest constraint here is geography, not distance from any head office: the area is spread out and some places sit deep inside the park. When you call, tell us the name of your accommodation and roughly where it is, and we will say plainly whether we can reach you. There are some spots we will tell you we cannot get to — better to hear that than to wait.

Healthcare in Phong Nha: hospitals, pharmacies and choosing a specialty
This section is here so you can orient yourself in Phong Nha — which hospital handles what, where to buy medicine, and which problems do not need a hospital at all.
Phong Nha is the place where distance and terrain decide everything. The city with the hospital is Dong Hoi, about forty-five kilometres from the Phong Nha area — roughly an hour each way. And here is the part few people factor in: the famous caves sit deep inside the national park, some of them fifteen to forty kilometres from the nearest road, with no phone signal. Between an injury in there and a hospital in Dong Hoi there is a walk or a boat, and only then a drive.
Public hospitals in Phong Nha
Vietnam – Cuba Friendship Hospital, Dong Hoi
A CENTRAL-tier public hospital under the Ministry of Health — not a provincial hospital, which is unusual in a good way for a region like this. Around 450 beds, strongest in surgery and cardiology, with Cuban medical specialists working there. According to a National Assembly newspaper feature on the province improving healthcare for visitors, some of its doctors work in English, Spanish and French, and the hospital helps foreign patients complete the paperwork needed to claim on international insurance. Read that at the right level: it is help with DOCUMENTATION, not an insurer settling directly with the hospital.
Bo Trach District General Hospital
A district-level public hospital whose catchment explicitly includes the Phong Nha – Ke Bang tourist area. It is closer than Dong Hoi for anything that does not need central-tier care.
Inside a cave, distance works differently
The largest cave-tour operator here states plainly in its own tour terms that, because of the remote location, the rescue team and medical assistance MAY TAKE SEVERAL HOURS to reach a casualty. That is the single most worthwhile sentence in this whole section. If you are booking a multi-day cave trip, ask the operator to describe their evacuation procedure SPECIFICALLY — do not just ask whether they have one.
Buying medicine in Phong Nha
Here we have to be straight about a gap: we could not find any source we trust that documents a single pharmacy in the Phong Nha area — not even whether the major chains are present. So we are printing no addresses. The practical conclusion, which is more useful than any list would be: in a small tourist area an hour from the hospital, bring enough medicine for the whole trip rather than planning to buy it locally — something for fever, painkillers, oral rehydration salts, anti-diarrhoeals, antihistamines, and all of your regular medication.
- Three chains cover most of the country: FPT Long Châu (around 2,600 stores, the largest), Pharmacity (over 1,100) and An Khang (over 400). Long Châu's published hours are 06:00–23:00 and vary by store.
- Guardian is not a pharmacy — it is a health-and-beauty retailer. Do not go there to fill a prescription.
- Antibiotics are legally prescription-only, but in practice they are still widely sold without one. That is not a reason to self-prescribe: the wrong antibiotic, or the wrong dose, makes things worse.
- Ask by generic name rather than the brand you know from home — paracetamol, ibuprofen, loratadine and oral rehydration salts are understood everywhere.
- Bring the original packaging and prescription for anything you take long-term. Worth knowing: in Vietnam it is against the rules to carry more than seven days of prescribed medicine, and counterfeit medicines do circulate — so for anything important, prefer a major chain or a hospital pharmacy.
Where to go for what
Caving and trekking injuries
This is the region's signature case group. The largest tour operator publishes fairly specific entry conditions: ages eighteen to seventy, at least one previous overnight trekking and camping trip, a fitness benchmark of climbing five flights of stairs continuously or running five kilometres on the flat within three quarters of an hour, and named contraindications including cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and musculoskeletal conditions. Each group of ten guests has one cave expert, one guide, six safety assistants and a first-aid kit — but NO doctor accompanying them. Read those conditions as a genuine self-assessment, not as paperwork.
Discharge is where the trip actually breaks
This is what we see most in this region. A wound needing its dressing changed every other day, stitches out after ten, a course of injections, physiotherapy after a fracture — none of it fits a booking that was supposed to end on Thursday. The two realistic options are to stay and have the follow-up come to you, or to move to a bigger city and do it there.
Cave water and floodwater
The US CDC names leptospirosis and melioidosis as illnesses spread through water and muddy soil, and advises avoiding floodwater and swimming in untreated fresh water. That is the real basis for keeping an open graze out of murky water when caving or wading — not excessive caution.
Unexploded ordnance — a genuine regional risk
Quang Tri is among the most heavily UXO-contaminated areas in Vietnam, and clearance is still ongoing: one international organisation working here reports releasing over thirty million square metres of land and destroying nearly ten thousand explosive items in 2025 alone. The correct practice is simple: stay on roads and established paths, do not wander into scrub or unmarked open ground, and if you see a metal object that might be ordnance, do NOT touch it — the local clearance programme runs a reporting line: 0901 941 941.
Season
The largest cave expedition here runs only from January to the end of August and closes from September for weather reasons. We have no source on whether the shorter, more mainstream caves close seasonally — so ask the operator directly rather than inferring from that one case.
