The city is large and traffic at rush hour is what it is, so call ahead — we would rather agree a realistic time with you than have you sitting waiting. Healthcare in Ho Chi Minh City: hospitals, pharmacies and choosing a specialty
This section is here so you can orient yourself in Ho Chi Minh City — which hospital handles what, where to buy medicine, and which problems do not need a hospital at all.
Ho Chi Minh City has the densest hospital system in the country, and that changes how you should choose: almost every specialty here has its own public hospital, so going to the right specialist hospital first is much faster than going to a general hospital and waiting to be referred. One more thing worth knowing: the city's 115 ambulance system is the best-organised in Vietnam, with a real control centre and dozens of ambulance stations — unlike the rest of the country.
Public hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City
Cho Ray Hospital — 201 Nguyen Chi Thanh
The largest public hospital in the city and the main trauma centre for southern Vietnam. The single most useful fact for foreign patients, and this comes from the U.S. Embassy's own facility list: there is an English-speaking section dedicated to foreigners on the 10th floor. That is one of very few English-language claims about a Vietnamese public hospital that a government body states explicitly.
Hospital for Tropical Diseases — 764 Vo Van Kiet
The end-of-line referral hospital for infectious disease in southern Vietnam, and co-host of the University of Oxford's clinical research unit. If you have a persistent high fever, suspected dengue or a suspected infectious illness, this is the right place rather than a general hospital.
Trauma and Orthopaedics Hospital — 929 Tran Hung Dao
The public specialist hospital for trauma and orthopaedics. For a suspected fracture, a joint injury or the aftermath of a road accident, this is the right specialty.
Paediatrics: Children's Hospital 1 — 341 Su Van Hanh, and Children's Hospital 2 — 14 Ly Tu Trong
The city's two public paediatric hospitals. Choose by distance from where you are staying; both are where paediatric cases for the region concentrate.
Maternity: Tu Du Hospital — 284 Cong Quynh
The city's largest public maternity hospital.
People's Hospital 115 — 88 Thanh Thai
⚠️ Listed separately for a very practical reason: this is the NAME OF A HOSPITAL, not the emergency phone number. The number for an ambulance is 115; People's Hospital 115 is a building at 88 Thanh Thai. Confusing the two is easy to do in a hurry.
Buying medicine in Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City gives you the most pharmacy options anywhere: all three big chains are dense here, and this is also where the Trung Son chain operates, unlike Ha Noi. But opening hours vary by individual store rather than by chain: we found stores running late and stores shutting in the afternoon, so the only safe thing to say is check the specific store you intend to visit. If you are in Thao Dien, Phu My Hung or around the centre, you have markedly more choice than on the outskirts.
- Three chains cover most of the country: FPT Long Châu (around 2,600 stores, the largest), Pharmacity (over 1,100) and An Khang (over 400). Long Châu's published hours are 06:00–23:00 and vary by store.
- Guardian is not a pharmacy — it is a health-and-beauty retailer. Do not go there to fill a prescription.
- Antibiotics are legally prescription-only, but in practice they are still widely sold without one. That is not a reason to self-prescribe: the wrong antibiotic, or the wrong dose, makes things worse.
- Ask by generic name rather than the brand you know from home — paracetamol, ibuprofen, loratadine and oral rehydration salts are understood everywhere.
- Bring the original packaging and prescription for anything you take long-term. Worth knowing: in Vietnam it is against the rules to carry more than seven days of prescribed medicine, and counterfeit medicines do circulate — so for anything important, prefer a major chain or a hospital pharmacy.
Where to go for what
Emergencies and major trauma
Call 115 — in this city the 115 system has a genuine control centre and many ambulance stations, so calling is a more sensible option here than in much of Vietnam. Cho Ray is the main trauma centre for the south.
High fever, suspected dengue, infectious illness
The Hospital for Tropical Diseases, directly rather than via a general hospital. This is its own specialty, at end-of-line level.
Children and maternity
Go to the right specialist hospital. In Ho Chi Minh City the main benefit of choosing correctly at the start is not quality but skipping a referral step.
When you need English at a public facility
Cho Ray is the only entry on the U.S. Embassy list recorded as having an English-speaking section for foreigners. At other public facilities, assume you need to arrange your own interpreting.
Insurance: call your own line BEFORE admission
In Vietnam, an insurer paying the hospital directly happens essentially only at private facilities and usually only for inpatient care; at a public facility, expect to pay up front and claim afterwards. The most useful thing you can do is call the 24/7 line on your policy at the very start, ask them to open the case and get a reference number — and keep itemised invoices.
