Getting sick in the middle of a trip is miserable, and Hoi An is a town people come to for a few days. We have our own doctors and nurses working here, so you do not wait for anyone to travel in — they come to your hotel, homestay or villa, or you come to our clinic in Hoi An.

How we work in Hoi An
Our doctors and nurses are based in Hoi An, and we have a clinic here, so you have two ways to be seen: we come to where you are staying, or you come to us. Call first so we can confirm a time and send the right person for what you describe. The Old Town lanes are narrow — give us a landmark you can see from the door and our nurse will find you faster on a motorbike than a car ever would.
Used to short-stay visitors
Most people we see here are three or four days into a trip — dehydration, food poisoning, a wound that will not settle, a fever that will not break. We deal with that every week.

Our nurses ride motorbikes into the lanes around the Japanese Bridge where a car cannot go. Tell us a nearby landmark when you book.

Healthcare in Hoi An: hospitals, pharmacies and choosing a specialty
This section is here so you can orient yourself in Hoi An — which hospital handles what, where to buy medicine, and which problems do not need a hospital at all.
Hoi An has one medical characteristic most visitors do not know in advance, and it decides whether you stay or travel: the public facility here is a district-level centre of about one hundred beds, not a large hospital. Da Nang, which has the hospital that receives serious cases for the whole region, is roughly thirty kilometres away. So small things are very convenient to deal with in Hoi An, while anything major realistically means Da Nang.
Public hospitals in Hoi An
Hoi An Regional Medical Center — 04 Tran Hung Dao
The public facility in Hoi An: about one hundred beds, Grade III, with an outpatient and emergency department. ⚠️ The name changed in 2025 — if you find "Hoi An General Hospital" in a search, that is the former name and the institution no longer exists under it, although the street address is unchanged. Its own site lists no international department and no English-language service, so treat it as a Vietnamese-language facility.
Since the 2025 merger, Hoi An is part of Da Nang city
This genuinely matters for paperwork and insurance forms: addresses in Hoi An are now written as a ward of Da Nang city, not as Quang Nam province. Many sources still use the old names, and both forms are in live circulation — so do not "correct" an address you have not cross-checked.
Serious cases: the realistic destination is Da Nang
Grade III is a district-level classification, meaning limited intensive-care and trauma capability. For a serious case the practical answer is transfer to Da Nang, about thirty kilometres away. We flag this as an inference from the grading and the distance rather than a published protocol — but it is worth planning around if you are in Hoi An with someone who has a chronic condition.
Buying medicine in Hoi An
FPT Long Chau is present in Hoi An — one store verifiable on the chain's own site is 105 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. But unlike Da Nang, Pharmacity lists NO 24-hour store in Hoi An on its own 24/7 page. In a town where most visitors stay either in the old quarter or out at An Bang and Cua Dai and get around by bicycle, that is worth knowing in advance: buy what you need before dark.
- Three chains cover most of the country: FPT Long Châu (around 2,600 stores, the largest), Pharmacity (over 1,100) and An Khang (over 400). Long Châu's published hours are 06:00–23:00 and vary by store.
- Guardian is not a pharmacy — it is a health-and-beauty retailer. Do not go there to fill a prescription.
- Antibiotics are legally prescription-only, but in practice they are still widely sold without one. That is not a reason to self-prescribe: the wrong antibiotic, or the wrong dose, makes things worse.
- Ask by generic name rather than the brand you know from home — paracetamol, ibuprofen, loratadine and oral rehydration salts are understood everywhere.
- Bring the original packaging and prescription for anything you take long-term. Worth knowing: in Vietnam it is against the rules to carry more than seven days of prescribed medicine, and counterfeit medicines do circulate — so for anything important, prefer a major chain or a hospital pharmacy.
Where to go for what
Small things: handle them in Hoi An
Stomach upsets, dehydration, soft-tissue wounds, road rash from a bicycle or motorbike spill, sunburn. All of this can be dealt with where you are staying, and travelling to Da Nang for any of it costs you a day for no reason.
Big things: plan on Da Nang
Injuries needing imaging, a suspected fracture, anything needing surgery or admission. Call 115 first; if the situation allows, the sensible destination is Da Nang.
Language
The public facility in Hoi An works in Vietnamese and its own site lists no foreign-language service. In a town where most of the overnight population is foreign, this is the widest gap between what is needed and what exists — and the reason we arrange interpreting when you need it.
Longer-term care
Hoi An is the location with the most active ongoing care in our network after Da Nang. Daily dressing changes, injections by indication, scheduled care for older or post-operative patients — this is routine work for us here.
Mosquitoes and water after a storm
The US CDC lists dengue as a year-round risk in much of Vietnam and notes that floodwater raises the risk of skin and waterborne infection. Hoi An floods seasonally, so after wading through water an open graze is something to deal with rather than ignore.
