Of all the places we work, Huế has the strongest hospital provision, and that is worth knowing before anything goes wrong. The city has a hospital holding Vietnam's special grade — the highest tier in the system, held by only a handful of hospitals nationally — and it is the end-of-line referral centre for the whole of Central Vietnam. If something serious happens, you do not have to be moved to another city. The other side of that: an end-of-line hospital is always busy, and both the Australian and UK government facility lists record the working language at Huế's public hospitals as Vietnamese. So for anything that does not actually need a hospital, going to one is the slowest option available to you.

Buying medicine in Hue

In Huế, buying medicine is easier than getting seen. There is a Pharmacity store open 24/7 at 6 Nguyễn Thái Học — worth writing down, because what you need at two in the morning is usually a box of something, not an ambulance. The other chains are all present in the city, but individual store addresses change often, so the reliable move is to check the specific store on a map or ask your hotel to phone ahead, rather than trusting a printed list.

• Three chains cover most of the country: FPT Long Châu (around 2,600 stores, the largest), Pharmacity (over 1,100) and An Khang (over 400). Long Châu's chain hours are 06:00–23:00 and vary by store; Pharmacity runs 24/7 only at specific stores.
• Guardian is not a pharmacy — it is a health-and-beauty retailer. Do not go there to fill a prescription.
• Antibiotics are legally prescription-only, but in practice they are still widely sold without one (surveys measure roughly 90% of transactions), and enforcement is only beginning to tighten at the hospital level. That is not a reason to self-prescribe: the wrong antibiotic, or the wrong dose, makes the illness worse and drives resistance.
• Ask by generic name, not by the brand you use at home — paracetamol, ibuprofen, loratadine, cetirizine are understood everywhere; a familiar trade name from home usually is not.
• Bring the original packaging and prescription for anything you take long-term. UK government advice flags two things worth knowing: in Vietnam it is against the rules to carry more than seven days of prescribed medicine, and counterfeit medicines do circulate — so for anything that matters, buy at a hospital pharmacy or a major chain rather than a one-off shop.

Where we fit in the picture above is fairly clear. The hospital handles what needs imaging, surgery or admission; we handle what does not: being examined where you are staying, IV fluids when you are dehydrated, dressing changes, stitch removal, injections by indication, and scheduled care for an older relative or someone recovering from surgery. For that kind of thing, coming to you is usually cheaper and simpler than a session at an end-of-line hospital, and it does not cost you a day of queueing. Our doctors and nurses work in Vietnamese and English; if you need another language, say so when you book and we will arrange interpreting. And if a case does need the hospital, we say so plainly — on the phone when you call, not after someone has already arrived.
