What does home care for a ventilator patient involve?
- Monitoring the ventilator: settings, alarms, backup power supply, and oxygen source.
- Suctioning using correct sterile technique to keep the airway clear.
- Care of the endotracheal tube or tracheostomy cannula, including dressing changes around the stoma.
- Oral hygiene, repositioning to prevent pressure sores, monitoring vital signs and SpO₂.
- Early detection of signs of infection or respiratory deterioration for timely coordination with the doctor.
Safety first: always have a backup power supply and an oxygen cylinder ready for power outages; know the emergency number and have a hospital transfer plan ready if the patient deteriorates.
